Harvard students win mobile app contest

By Brendan Lynch

Five Harvard University students will split a $10,000 scholarship they won as part of an AT&T-sponsored mobile application development contest.

The winners of AT&T’s Big Mobile On Campus Challenge — Alex Bick, Joy Ding, Drew Robb, Cameron Spickert and Winston Yan — will split the $10,000 prize they won for their “Rover” platform, which is designed to connect students with each other, their school and their community. The students will also each receive the mobile device of his or her choice and a trip to Denver for a product demonstration at the EduCause Annual Conference tomorrow.

Rover combines an online guidebook with location awareness and social networking technologies to let students know about events, news, deals and transportation information.

Runners-up included Northeastern University student Erica Simone and a team from Ball State University. Simone developed an app called “UpperClass,” which is intended to connect students, faculty, alumni and parents to key information while on the go. Simone won a $5,000 scholarship and the mobile device of her choice.

The Big Mobile On Campus Challenge for full-time college students and staff was established in 2008 to recognize innovative and creative mobile applications that enhance academic performance, build campus community and help to improve campus operations.
