Zeemote shuts down, plans sale of assets

By Rodney H. Brown

Chelmsford-based Zeemote Inc., which was making remote control devices for smart phones, has ceased operations, an investor confirmed. The company’s assets will be put up for sale.

According to investor Michael Fitzgerald of Commonwealth Capital Ventures, the company has shut its doors, but he declined to offer any further details of the closure, except to note the plans to sell Zeemote’s assets. The company was founded in 2005 in Bedford by 2008 Mass High Tech Women to Watch honoree Beth Marcus.

In January, Zeemote replaced Marcus as CEO with Ernie Cormier, the former chief commercial officer of Virgin Media and vice president of product management for Nextel Communications Inc. (now part of Sprint Nextel Corp.). In May, Marcus left the company altogether, saying she planned to take a break to spend time with her five-year-old daughter before moving forward with a book about entrepreneurship and consulting through one of her previous companies, Marcus Enterprises Ltd.

Last year, Zeemote made announcements about deals to distribute its handheld controllers — aimed initially at gaming applications on smart phones — through companies including Nokia Corp. and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB.

Zeemote raised $6.9 million in funding in late 2007 from Waltham’s Commonwealth Capital Ventures, Boston’s Egan-Managed Capital and Spanish firm Nauta Capital.
