Alnara Pharmaceuticals, a privately-held, Cambridge-based biotechnology company with a late stage cystic fibrosis drug target, has appointed its first chief medical officer.
Company officials say the appointment of Lee R. Brettman to the newly created position of CMO reflects Alnara’s continued growth as the company prepares to submit its lead drug target to the FDA.
Liprotamase is a pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy for patients with cystic fibrosis.
Brettman was the founder, president and CEO of Dynogen Pharmaceuticals, which filed for bankruptcy in February. Prior to Dynogen, he was the first entrepreneur-in-residence at Oxford Bioscience Partners and served as CMO and senior vice president, medical and regulatory affairs at Millenium Pharmaceuticals Inc. Brettman has ushered several drugs through the FDA approval including the Millennium cancer drug, Velcade.
The Alnara management team also includes former officials from the now-defunct Altus Pharmaceuticals Inc. Alnara licensed its lead drug target from Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics, after Altus decided not to pursue development of the drug early this year, and it reverted back to the Foundation.
