Foley & Lardner wins $208M NIH IP contract

Chicago-based law firm Foley & Lardner LLP, which has a significant intellectual property practice in Boston, has won a $208 million contract from the National Institutes of Health to provide intellectual property services to the government agency for as much as 10 years.
The contract starts this month, according to Foley officials, and the firm will handle contested proceedings work in the areas of biotechnology patents and mechanical/electrical/software patents for the NIH Office of Technology Transfer. That office is responsible for overseeing the wide range of NIH and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discoveries, inventions and other intellectual property as mandated by the Federal Technology Transfer Act and related legislation.
Foley’s intellectual property practice is comprised of nearly 240 attorneys, and the NIH work will be spread across the firm’s Boston; San Diego; Madison, Wis.; and Washington, D.C. offices. All told, Foley has nearly 1,000 attorneys in 21 offices and more than 60 practices, officials said.
The NIH, the top government agency for conducting and supporting medical research, is composed of 27 institutes and centers that focus on a wide array of medical research programs including cancer, diabetes, mental health and heart disease.
