Framingham wastewater collection nets $7.7M from MLSC
By Mass High Tech staff
The town of Framingham has won $7.7 million from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center for a wastewater system related to a Genzyme Corp. manufacturing expansion project.
With the funding, Framingham plans to upgrade its wastewater collection system in conjunction with an expansion project at Genzyme’s Framingham facility that is intended to create about 300 biomanufacturing jobs. The wastewater project is intended to improve the town’s sewer and water systems at its Technology Park.
The town received $5.2 million in November 2008 for Phase 1 of the wastewater management project. In 2008, Framingham used the Phase 1 grant to replace a wastewater pump station and the related pipes.
In September, the Life Sciences Center granted $90 million in capital funding toward the construction of a $405 million project at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
The MLSC is a quasi-public agency of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts tasked with implementing the Massachusetts Life Sciences Act, a 10-year, $1 billion initiative that was signed into law in June of 2008. The $90 million represents almost one year’s total investment by the state, since the $1 billion is to be spread out over ten years.
