Excelimmune wins SBIR grant

By Mass High Tech staff

Woburn biotech startup Excelimmune Inc. has won a Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Institutes of Health to apply toward the development of therapy for Clostridium difficile infection, which can cause diarrhea and intestinal issues.

The fund, the amount of which was not disclosed, will be used to support a project called “The Creation of a Human Recombinant Polyclonal Antibody Therapy against C. difficile.”

Excelimmune has conducted research on human recombinant polyclonal antibodies, which bind to several areas on a particular antigen or multiple antigens, helping the body fight viruses and bacteria.

Research for the treatment is in conjunction with Providence, R.I.’s Roger Williams Medical Center.

Excelimmune was founded in 2006. The firm landed $2 million in a Series A financing round in June of 2007.
