
The Maine Technology Institute reports it has given out $1.3 million in grants to Pine Tree State technology companies and projects, including a dog-products website co-founded by actress Glenn Close.
The development awards, worth up to $500,000 each, are intended to be used for product development, commercialization, technology transfer and business planning and development. Each award requires a 1:1 match from the awardee of cash, salaries, staff time or equipment and in-kind contributions directly attributable to the proposed project.
The following received grants:
• Advance Electronic Concepts, Portland: The company received $125,000 to develop an energy-efficient, solid-state lighting system for supermarket refrigeration cases.
• DM Technologies LLC, Sanford: DM received $410,000 to develop a prototype refining production process, and to bring a finished product to market.
• The University of Maine Orono: The university won $85,000 to determine the viability of using wood that has previously undergone hemicellulose extraction in new composite materials in an attempt to find a new product for the state’s lumber mills.
• Global Protein Products Inc., Waterville The company brought $171,000 to develop and test two potato-targeted products.
• Fetch Enterprises, Portland: The company, co-founded by Glenn Close, won $470,000 to commercialize data extraction, mapping and standardization of software to automate operations.
