EnterpriseDB gets investment from Red Hat

By Rodney H. Brown

EnterpriseDB Corp., a Westford-based company that provides products and services to support the PostgreSQL open source database, has landed an investment from open source pioneer Red Hat Inc. The two companies did not disclose the amount of the investment.

In addition to supplying a version of the open source operating system Linux, North Carolina-based Red Hat also provides products that work with the OS, including JBoss and Postgres Plus, which is EnterpriseDB’s distribution of the database software that includes enterprise components, installers and professional documentation.

According to officials at both companies, the investment in EnterpriseDB is part of a partnership aimed at increasing enterprise adoption of open source software in the enterprise.

Ed Boyajian, president and CEO of EnterpriseDB, said that he shares Red Hat’s belief that the database will be the next major area of open source adoption in the enterprise, as companies move away from proprietary products such as Microsoft Corp.’s SQL Server.

In April, EnterpriseDB entered into a deal with IBM Corp. to embed EnterpriseDB’s Postgres Plus Advanced Server technology into IBM’s DB2 9.7 database, which allowed applications written for Oracle Inc.’s database products to run in DB2.

EnterpriseDB was founded in 2004. The privately held company has been backed by venture capital firms and strategic partners, including Valhalla Partners, Charles River Ventures, Fidelity Ventures, IBM, NTT and Sony.
