U.S. Customs to protect borders with $9M AS&E inspection order
By Mass High Tech staff
X-ray detection systems developer American Science and Engineering Inc. (AS&E) has received a $9.1 million order from U.S. Customs and Border Protection to supply its cargo and vehicle inspection systems. The contract was funded by the Department of Homeland Security, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The Billerica-based company will provide MobileSearch High-Energy inspection systems complete with the company’s Z Backscatter X-ray imaging and high-energy transmission.
AS&E (Nasdaq: ASEI) president and CEO Anthony Fabiano noted the company’s ability to aid U.S. Customs with detection of metallic and organic threats in cargo. Its MobileSearch HE system combines both high-energy transmission X-ray to identify metallic objects, while the Z Backscatter X-ray imaging technology can identify organic contraband used in explosives.
The U.S. government has helped fuel AS&E’s cargo inspection business. In August, the company landed an $11.5 million renewal order from the U.S. government to handle service and maintenance on the company’s Z Backscatter Vans and ZBV Military Trailers — two systems used in counterterrorist measures.
