Hundreds of college students descended on Microsoft Corp.’s New England Research and Development Center last night for a Windows 7 launch party, and while no college student would turn down the free food or club music, it was the almost certain chance of getting a free copy of Windows 7 that brought them there.
Students had the chance to enter into a raffle that saw Microsoft’s senior academic developer evangelist Edwin Guarin handing out such things as Xbox 360 games, copies of Office 2007 and Windows 7 itself. In between raffles and Windows 7 promo videos, students were treated to DJ Fury spinning tracks.
According to Microsoft spokesperson Pam Jonah, about 800 students signed up for the event, and Guarin got shout outs from students attending colleges including Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Babson College, Harvard University and MIT. As long as they had a valid student ID, each student was guaranteed a copy of Windows 7.
For the almost certain chance of getting a Windows 7 copy, the students were asked to watch a five-minute video about the product once every 30 minutes or so, and some even cheered at some of the features highlighted in the video. But the biggest cheer of the evening might have come from a group of students playing with the Surface coffee table touch-screen computer who managed to crash it into a “Blue Screen Of Death.”
