Holyoke data center project targeted for 2011 completion

By James M. Connolly

The high-performance data center planned by a coalition of universities and technology companies for Holyoke now has some target dates for construction and completion.

Gov. Deval Patrick today said that now that a 120-day planning period is done, groundbreaking for the data center on the banks of the Connecticut River — sited to take advantage of high-speed communications lines along the Massachusetts Turnpike and U.S. Route 91 that meet in the Holyoke area — is scheduled for next fall, with a target completion date set for late 2011. The project is designed to draw hydroelectric power from the river while serving as an example of a green, environmentally friendly data center.

The project was announced in June by the coalition that includes MIT, the University of Massachusetts, Boston University, EMC Corp., Cisco Systems Inc. and Accenture PLC. The public-private collaboration on the Holyoke High Performance Computing Center is an attempt to drive innovation and job growth in the Pioneer Valley.
