Rapid7 buys open-source platform Metasploit

By Jackie Noblett

IT security testing and management technology developer Rapid7 announced Wednesday it has acquired Metasploit, which is developing an open-source attack testing platform.

Boston-based Rapid7 said the acquisition of Metasploit and its database of public, tested IT exploits, the Metasploit Project, will boost the capabilities of Rapid7’s network vulnerability monitoring software.

“With our broader solution portfolio, we are the first security provider to meet the demand of enterprises and government agencies in enabling them to identify and mitigate exploitable threats in their IT environment based on their security risk profile,” said Mike Tuchen, president and CEO of Rapid7, in a statement.

Company officials said they remain committed to the free, open-source Metasploit Project platform, and will dedicate company resources to the autonomous site. The project’s key organizers will take on full-time positions with the company: Metasploit founder HD Moore was named Rapid7’s chief security officer and chief architect and other key developers were also hired.

On his blog, Moore said the acquisition will allow him and his team to dedicate more resources to the project — which had been a part-time, volunteer venture — resulting in faster updates of the testing platform with fewer software bugs.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
