Open-source statistics computing software and services provider REvolution Computing Inc. has received $9 million in venture funding and named a new CEO, the company announced.
New CEO Norman Nie is the founder of SPSS, an open-source computing language for predictive analytics that is a predecessor to REvolution’s technology. REvolution develops software and provides support for businesses using the open-source ‘R’ statistical computing language.
New investor North Bridge Venture Partners joined return backer Intel Capital in the round, which is the second REvolution has announced since the company closed a Series A round last January with Intel. The amount of the round was not disclosed.
REvolution’s press release quoted North Bridge partner Basil Horangic citing the R language’s two million users, and its large community of open-source software contributors, who have expanded the language’s capabilities to challenge predecessors like SPSS and SAS.
Nie founded SPSS in 1968, according to REvolution’s press release. IBM acquired the company in August 2009 for $1.2 billion.
REvolution has administrative headquarters in New Haven, Conn., and a technical team based in Seattle, Wash.
