Seventh Sense Biosystems' malaria monitoring project wins Gates Foundation grant
By Mass High Tech staff
Medical device startup Seventh Sense Biosystems Inc. has won a Grand Challenges Explorations grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to apply to a global malaria infection monitoring project.
The Grand Challenges Exploration grants support researchers engaged in new “largely unproven” ways to address health concerns in developing countries. Of 3,000 proposals the Gates Foundation received, 76 projects from 16 countries were selected to receive grants.
In addressing the monitoring of malaria infections, Seventh Sense Biosystems has eliminated expensive devices in lieu of technology made to be inexpensive, quick and easy to use and field-compatible. The technology is designed to monitor the status of a malaria infection using Seventh Sense’s particle-based detection technology and interstitial fluid access.
The amount of Seventh Sense’s individual grant was not disclosed. However, the Grand Challenges Explorations program itself is a five-year, $100 million initiative.
Cambridge-based Seventh Sense Biosystems is a venture-backed health monitoring firm founded in 2007 and backed by Flagship Ventures, Polaris Venture Partners, and Third Rock Ventures. The company’s products are made to interact with human skin to provide health analytics.
