UMass Medical School taps Ware for better patient data tools
By Mass High Tech staff
The University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester report that it has named John E. Ware Jr. as professor and chief of outcomes measurement science in the department of Quantitative Health Sciences (QHS). Ware will work with clinical scientists to develop standardized technologies and forms used in patient-reported outcome (PRO) surveys.
According to school officials, the Division of Outcomes Measurement Science plans to enhance and standardize the metrics that come from PRO surveys.
Ware comes to UMass Medical School from QualityMetric Inc., a company he founded in 1997 that was focused on health survey tools, where he served as CEO, chairman of the board and chief science officer. Before launching QualityMetric, Ware served for 12 years as senior scientist at the Health Institute at New England Medical Center (NEMC) in Boston, where he was principal investigator for the Medical Outcomes Study.
At NEMC, Ware created tools which are widely used to document disease burden and treatment effectiveness across therapeutic areas. In 2003, he won the President’s Award from the International Society of Quality of Life Research.
Prior to moving to Boston, Ware was senior research psychologist for 14 years at the Rand Corp. In 1996, he was elected into the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine.
