Yale's Hong Tang lands photonics research grant

By Brendan Lynch

Yale University photonics researcher Hong Tang has won an $875,000 grant from the Packard Foundation, according to the school.

Tang, an assistant professor of electrical engineering in Yale’s School of Engineering & Applied Science, has won a 2009 Packard Foundation Fellowship for Science and Engineering. Tang’s photonics research focuses on using optical forces to activate motion in nanoscale systems. He is trying to use the weak force exerted by ordinary light to manipulate components of silicon chips.

The fellowship is awarded to 16 young researchers annually working in natural or physical sciences and engineering. The fellowship consists of an unrestricted, five-year grant of $875,000.

Tang joined Yale in 2006 after receiving his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. Earlier this year, he won an award from the National Science Foundation.
