New Commerce office to assist entrepreneurs
The U.S. Department of Commerce plans to launch a new Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship to help turn new ideas into fast-growing businesses.
“We’re not lacking for groundbreaking ideas in this country,” said Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. “Nor are we short on smart entrepreneurs willing to take risks. What we need to do is get better at connecting the great ideas to the great company builders.”
The new office will focus on many of the same areas the Small Business Administration already addresses: entrepreneurship training, improving access to capital, and commercializing federal research and development. Unlike the SBA, however, the office will target its assistance to entrepreneurs, not the small business community at large.
