Sturtevant leaves Microsoft’s Startup Labs amid reshuffle
By Rodney H. Brown
Local software veteran Reed Sturtevant, who was running Microsoft Corp.’s Startup Labs in Cambridge as its managing director, has left the company as the lab is being combined with two other labs to form a new operation, Future Social Experiences (FUSE) Labs, to be based in Redmond, Wash.
The new lab will focus on social computing and will be headed up by general manager Lili Cheng, who was previously running one of the three labs, the MSR Creative Systems group, in Redmond. Also in the new FUSE mix is the Rich Media Lab, according to a company spokesperson.
FUSE Labs’ team will explore new social, real-time and media-rich applications and services. According to Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie, by combining these teams under a single leader and mission, FUSE Labs can achieve greater impact through tighter focus and a more holistic approach.
Sturtevant has decided to pursue other interests outside of Microsoft, a spokesperson said. Other than the management change, there will be little change in the operations of the Startup Labs, said Catherine Collins, Microsoft’s East Region public relations manager
“The people that were in Startups Labs will stay here and Lili will manage them,” said Collins.
Sturtevant came to Microsoft from a CTO role at Eons Inc., the baby-boomer-focused website launched by former Monster.com founder Jeff Taylor.
