Idera Pharmaceuticals Inc. has initiated a phase 1 clinical trial using the company’s Hepatitis C drug target, known as IMO-2125 in combination with another treatment called ribavirin.
The Cambridge-based biotechnology company’s trial is geared towards patients who are treatment-naive, meaning they have never received treatment for Hepatitis C (HCV). The company also has an ongoing trial using the drug target alone, as a monotherapy.
The drug candidate will be administered as an injection once a week for four weeks in combination with daily oral administration of standard doses of ribavirin. The trial will treat groups of 15 patients, with receiving IMO-2125 plus ribavirin treatment and the other three receiving only ribavirin. The clinical trial is expected to be conducted at five or more sites in France and Russia.
Idera develops drug candidates to treat infectious and autoimmune diseases, cancer and respiratory diseases, in addition to its use as vaccine adjuvants. Its candidates are designed to modulate specific Toll-like receptors, a family of immune system receptors which direct immune system responses.
