Boston Scientific stents get FDA nod

By Mass High Tech staff

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted approval to Natick medical devices giant Boston Scientific Corp. for its Wallflex Biliary RX fully and partially covered stents.

The company’s uncovered stent was approved by the FDA in 2006.

The newly approved fully covered and partially covered stents include new features like its Platinol Wire for better flexibility, radial force and radiopacity, company officials said in a statement. The covered construction is made to hinder tissue ingrowth, and ultimately reduce potential tumor ingrowth.

Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX) reported a net loss for fiscal 2008 of $2 billion on revenue of $8 billion.

Last month, the company paid $716 million to settle long-standing litigation with Johnson & Johnson Co. over intellectual property rights tied to Boston Scientific’s cardiac stents.
