Bluefin Lab’s software to scan sports video

By Galen Moore

A new MIT media lab startup backed by federal stimulus dollars and venture capital firm Kepha Partners aims to bring to market a software that will automatically analyze and search sports video, Kepha and the company’s co-founders confirmed yesterday.

Somerville-based Bluefin Lab has received $500,000 from the federal Small Business Innovation Research grant program — part of $730 million allocated to the SBIR program by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed this February, according to federal documents.

The company, founded by Media Lab researcher Michael Ben Fleischman, with help from Media Lab director Frank Moss, serial entrepreneur Andy Palmer and Media Lab researcher Deb Roy, aims to integrate speech, text and video into “rich semantic indexes” that will index video “with high accuracy and at a fraction of the cost of currently used methods,” according to its grant application on file with the SBIR program.

“The company has identified a large and growing consumer market (sports video) in which the technology can be applied,” the application states.

Kepha general partner Jo Tango said the company is still in stealth mode and is not likely to launch until 2010, but was written about recently on the Boston Globe’s Innovation Economy blog.  Tango did not disclose the amount of Waltham-based Kepha’s investment.
