Mass. Clean Energy Center awards cleantech grant to Worcester institute
By Mass High Tech staff
Worcester’s Institute for Energy Innovation and Sustainability (IEIS) has won a $150,000 grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center to help get the institute’s operations running.
U.S. Representative James McGovern, D-Worcester, spearheaded the formation of the IEIS, which is intended to add jobs in the fields of alterative energy, energy conservation and sustainability.
The IEIS is currently seeking an executive director to lead the institute’s three-pronged efforts in scientific research, energy usage and jobs, in addition to securing funding and developing an advisory board.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Clark University have involved themselves early, and IEIS officials said they will encourage all of Worcester’s colleges and technical high schools to participate.
The Clean Energy Center was created by the Green Jobs Act of 2008 to provide funding and support to grow the state’s cleantech employment base. Last month, the center awarded grant funding, totaling $1 million, to six Massachusetts job-training institutions. The funds are intended to support development of vocational programs in the cleantech sector.
