Zoll Medical, Phillips Healthcare win defense agency defibrillator deals

By Brendan Lynch

Zoll Medical Corp. and Phillips Healthcare have each landed more than $25 million from the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency for defibrillators, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Chelmsford-based Zoll Medical (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL) has brought in $29.8 million from the agency for CCT defibrillators. Andover-based Phillips Healthcare brought in $26.6 million for HeartStart MRX defibrillators.

Both companies’ defibrillators will be used by the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and federal civilian agencies. Work on each deal is expected to be completed by September 2010.

In March, Philips landed $77.2 million from the Defense Logistics Agency to provide patient monitoring systems, subsystems, accessories, consumables, spare/repair parts and training to the four branches of the armed services and federal civilian agencies.

In April, Zoll received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to market and sell a new model of the LifeVest wearable defibrillator. The LifeVest wearable defibrillator is worn by patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest.

Also that month, Zoll recalled its AED Plus Defibrillators due to malfunctioning batteries and self-test software that fails to detect defective batteries.
