AMSC, Sinovel sign $100M wind turbine supply deal
By Mass High Tech staff
American Superconductor Corp. has won a contract worth more than $100 million with Beijing-based Sinovel Wind Corp. Ltd. The Devens-based superconductor and renewable energy component maker will provide electrical components for use in the Chinese wind turbine producer’s 3 megawatt wind turbine, known as SL3000.
Sinovel previously signed an $18 million contract with AMSC in 2008. The company is the largest wind turbine maker in China, according to Sinovel officials, and soon to be the fifth largest in the world by the end of the year. The company’s previous focus on 1.5 megawatt turbines has now grown to 3 megawatt turbines, which are located off the Shanghai coast.
AMSC’s electrical systems and core electrical components — which include the company’s PowerModule power converters — control power flows, regulate voltage, monitor system performance and control the pitch of wind turbine blades to maximize efficiency. The company will begin shipping its components in March 2010 and complete it by the end of 2011.
In July, AMSC reported that Sinovel increased the size of its contract to more than $470 million to meet greater demand for its wind turbines in China.
AMSC has been working with Sinovel since 2005, and the two companies entered into a joint development contract in 2007. AMSC’s wind equipment stems from the company’s acquisition of Austria-based Windtec in January 2007 for $12.4 million.
