Ahura Scientific, QinetiQ deal brings spectrometry to robots
By Brendan Lynch
Ahura Scientific Inc. reports it has partnered with QinetiQ North America’s Technology Solutions Group to add Ahura’s spectrometry technology to QinetiQ’s Talon robots.
Under terms of the agreement, the companies will add a compact, laboratory-grade Raman spectrometer to Talon military robots. Wilmington-based Ahura makes handheld instruments that identify chemicals, including explosives, chemical weapons, hazardous materials and narcotics, for first responders. The companies plan to mount the spectrometer on a gripper arm attached to the chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive and explosive ordinance disposal Talon modules.
The spectrometer will be controllable through the robot’s command console.
QinetiQ’s Talon robots are tracked vehicles used for bomb disposal, reconnaissance, communications, hazardous materials removal, security and rescue.
Last month, QinetiQ awarded Dynamics Research Corp. a $1.4 million subcontract for recommendations for the redesign of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s Agriculture Quarantine Activity System.
Virginia-based QinetiQ’s Technology Solutions Group, including Foster-Miller Inc., is based in Waltham.
