
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and Lowell Regional Transit Authority will receive $4 million in federal stimulus money to add renewable energy generators to their properties, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Monday.
The entities were among 43 transportation agencies to receive grants through an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act program, valued at $787 billion and enacted in February, designed to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption of public transportation.
The MBTA plans to use its $2.5 million in stimulus funds to design and construct wind turbines at its facilities in Kingston, Newburyport and Bridgewater. The LRTA will uses its $1.5 million to build a solar photovoltaic system on the roof of its 70,000 garage on Hale Street in Lowell.
