According to a new report to be unveiled this evening by the Mass Technology Leadership Council, the Bay State is home to a digital gaming cluster that will account for more than $2 billion in value this year and employs approximately 1,200 people statewide.
One of the findings from the report shows how the venture community is involved in the area’s gaming companies. The report found that only 13 percent of such companies are venture backed, while 79 percent are private or angel-funded and 8 percent are public.
Also of note in the report is the length of time the industry has been working quietly in the background. According to MassTLC’s survey, almost 50 percent of the companies have been in business for more than five years. Among those with a track record in the Bay State are Westwood-based Turbine Inc., the maker of such games as Lord of the Rings Online; Harmonix Inc., the maker of Guitar Hero and Rock Band; and Waltham’s Blue Fang Games, the maker of the Zoo Tycoon franchise.
The report sees strong growth in the sector as well — industry jobs are expected to increase by 20 percent this year alone, MassTLC said.
MassTLC’s digital gaming cluster organized the survey. The cluster is co-chaired by Peter Blacklow, president of WorldWinner and an executive vice president at WorldWinner’s parent GSN Digital and Jon Radoff, CEO of GamerDNA.
