BeyondTrust acquired by Symark

By Jackie Noblett

Portsmouth, N.H.-based IT access management software firm BeyondTrust has been purchased by Symark International and the combined company will be known as BeyondTrust, the companies announced Monday.

John Mutch, CEO of Agoura Hills, Calif.-based Symark, will lead the new company and its strategy of offering software that controls privilege access to IT administration functions for a wide variety of operating systems. Company officials said the acquisition of BeyondTrust brings in software and services for Microsoft Corp.’s Windows operating system to build upon Symark’s expertise in Linux and Unix operating systems.

“What we saw was a very strong management team, a very strong engineering skill set and also a technology that could be a foundation to build a least-privilege access management platform on Windows,” said Steve Kelley, vice president of corporate development, in an interview with Mass High Tech. “This is a very strategic and compelling acquisition for a company our size.”

The decision to name the new company BeyondTrust was based on the Portsmouth company’s brand recognition in the Windows space.

“Symark’s product line brand had a more powerful name recognition than the company itself ... We felt the name BeyondTrust much better articulated what we are offering — a system that goes beyond just trusting IT administrators and other privileged users to protect the data,” Kelley said.

He added that BeyondTrust will run its Portsmouth Windows operations independently of its West Coast business in an effort to retain all of the company’s employees through the transition.

The deal officially closed Aug. 19 and terms were not disclosed.
