AstraZeneca reported to cut 113 jobs
By Mass High Tech staff
London pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca PLC, which runs some local operations in Massachusetts, is losing 113 jobs from its manufacturing plant in Westborough, as of early October, according to the Boston Globe.
The report indicates that growing competition in the company’s asthma medication market factored in to the job cuts.
AstraZeneca also operates a research and development facility in Waltham, where the company will soon celebrate the opening of its newly expanded office, the Globe reports. In January of 2007, AstraZeneca announced a $100 million investment to add 132,000 square feet to its facilities. At the time, the investment was intended to boost work in the infectious disease area and continue its growth in cancer research. Ironically, the expanded office could house up to 100 additional researchers, according to an earlier report.
