Connecticut Innovations directs $1M to Optiwind
By Mass High Tech staff
Optiwind Corp., a Torrington, Conn.-based developer of wind turbines, has received $1 million from Connecticut Innovations, the state’s quasi-public authority on technology and innovation investment. The backing comes from the agency’s Connecticut Clean Tech Fund, which partners CI with the state department of economic and community development (DECD) and the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF).
Optiwind develops a rotating wind turbine that adjusts to always face prevailing winds. The design involves one revolving cylinder with six or 12 mid-size wind acceleration turbines mounted on it. The design enables the turbine to maximize power generation under less-than-ideal wind conditions.
Optiwind designs its turbines for schools, factories, large retailers, offices and other facilities.
Created by the Connecticut Legislature in 1989, Connecticut Innovations is charged with stimulating the tech industry in the state. The group turns any profits it makes from investments back into a pool used to invest in new companies. Since 1995, it has funded more than 100 companies and generated more than $510 million in gross profits to the state, according to officials.
