American Superconductor Corp. announced Wednesday it is forming AMSC India to provide wind turbine and electrical component products and services to the Asian country’s emerging wind market.
The subsidiary based in Delhi will offer local engineering, sales and field service support to local turbine manufacturers as well as house business development offices. The Devens-based company licenses turbine design and sells electrical voltage regulators and other components to turbine manufacturers around the world. AMSC has two customers in India licensing its turbine designs: Ghodawat and Inox.
Asia has been seen as a key market for the energy technology company. AMSC opened a Chinese business unit, AMSC China, in 2007. In July, the company reported that Beijing-based Sinovel Wind Corp. Ltd. increased the size of its contract to more than $470 million to meet greater demand for its wind turbines in China. The original Sinovel contract, which was signed in January, was valued at $450 million and called for AMSC to ship core electrical components.
AMSC employs approximately 500 employees and reported a $16.6 million loss on $182.75 million in revenue for its last fiscal year, which ended in March 2009.
