IRobot, Vecna awarded slice of $3.6M robotics grants

By Brendan Lynch

The Robotics Technology Consortium has given out $3.6 million to a group of robotics companies including local firms iRobot Corp. and Vecna Technologies Inc.

Bedford-based iRobot (Nasdaq: IRBT)‎is working on a project titled “Autonomous: Supervisory Control with Enhanced Situational Awareness,” and Vecna, with a location in Cambridge, is working on a project called “Automated Tool Change.”

Seven other robotics companies received funding, but individual grant amounts were not disclosed.

In June, the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based consortium gave iRobot two grants, one for a project called “Sniper/Hostile Fire Defeat,” and another for a project called “RTK-Remote Touch Kit.

The Robotics Technology Consortium is a nonprofit industry organization intended to speed up the creation and deployment of ground robotics technology for the U.S. Department of Defense and other government organizations, by engaging companies who have not traditionally worked for the Department of Defense. The consortium was established to meet a need identified by the Office of the Secretary of Defense Joint Ground Robotics Enterprise (OSD/JGRE). Founded in 2008, the consortium has 158 members, including companies, academic institutions and nonprofit organizations.
