EMC buys Kazeon Systems

By Galen Moore

EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC) has acquired Kazeon Systems Inc., the Hopkinton-based storage giant announced today — adding an e-discovery software tool for legal industry and compliance to its SourceOne family of products.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Kazeon makes electronic discovery reference model (EDRM)-based e-discovery software for corporations, legal service providers, government entities and law firms. According to EMC’s press release, a key component of Kazeon’s offering is its ability to handle data stored anywhere in the enterprise environment, including laptops, desktops, content management repositories, Microsoft SharePoint and Exchange, Lotus Domino, e-mail archives and file shares.

Kazeon’s product is available as an appliance, EMC noted. The company provides the Information Server 1200 appliance to EMC competitor NetApp Inc. (Nasdaq: NTAP) through an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) arrangement with the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based data storage company.

A venture-backed company, Kazeon received at least $75 million in six rounds of investment from backers including JK&B Capital, Clearstone Venture Partners, Menlo Ventures and Redpoint Ventures. Financial terms of the EMC deal were not revealed. The acquisition, expected to close within the quarter, will not have a material impact on company revenue, according to EMC.

Increasingly stringent government regulation is driving demand for e-discovery products, said Andrew Cohen, vice president and general manager of EMC’s e-discovery business, in a statement. And Kazeon founder and CEO Sudhakar Muddu said in a statement that the acquisition will help the company “take our market vision to the next level.”
