IRobot receives $35M PackBot order
By Mass High Tech staff
In what appears to be the 12th order under a $286 million indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity xBot contract, iRobot Corp. announced today a $35.3 million order from the U.S. Army TACOM Contracting Center in Warren, Mich.
The order calls for the Bedford-based robotics firm to deliver 486 PackBot 510 with FasTac Kit robots before March 31, 2010.
The PackBot 510 with FasTac Kit is intended to be lighter than similar robots and operate at speeds up to 5.8 miles per hour. It is used by soldiers and Marines in regions including Iraq and Afghanistan to investigate areas and suspicious objects using cameras and other sensors. Video and information are provided to the operator through a ruggedized laptop.
To date, the indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity xBot contract has reached $125 million in value. Under the terms of the contract, the Army could order up to 3,000 military robots, spare parts, training, and repair services through 2012. IRobot last received an IDIQ order in mid-August, when the Army submitted a $5.1 million order for 14 PackBot robots.
