EMC co-founder Egan's death reportedly a suicide

By Rodney H. Brown

The co-founder of Bay State technology giant EMC Corp., Richard Egan, died on Friday, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Egan, 73, had been diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year and, according to his online obituary, also suffered from emphysema, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Egan co-founded EMC with Roger Marino thirty years ago this week, according to company officials. He was named a Mass High Tech All-Star in 1998, and after stepping down as chairman of the Hopkinton-based storage technology company, he became the ambassador to Ireland in 2001, a post he resigned from in 2002.

According to a report by the Boston Globe as well as various broadcast news outlets, Egan committed suicide in his home. Born in Dorchester, Egan was living in Boston at the time of his death, the Globe reported.

A former Marine Corps helicopter pilot, Egan attended Northeastern University and received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering in 1961. He worked at Charles Stark Draper Laboratory after doing graduate studies at MIT, and he later worked for Lockheed Electronics Co., Cambridge Memories Inc. and Intel Corp. before founding EMC (NYSE: EMC).

Michael C. Ruettgers, retired EMC chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement, “I personally learned a great deal from working with him and always enjoyed our working relationship. He will be deeply missed by those of us who were fortunate enough to know him and call him a friend.”
