WPI officially opens $11.5M renovated life sciences center
By Mass High Tech staff
Worcester Polytechnic University officially opened the renovated George I. Alden Life Sciences and Bioengineering Educational Center today, courtesy of an $11.5 million gift from the George I. Alden Trust. The facility is designed to accommodate the school’s 86 percent enrollment increase in the life sciences and related engineering programs.
The 21,300-square-foot center has four floors of laboratory, classroom, meeting and computer space intended specifically for biology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry and chemical engineering.
The George I. Alden Trust was created in honor of the late George Alden, who taught mechanical engineering at WPI in the late 19th century. The trust, the school’s “most generous donor” in history, has given more than $19 million to WPI over 96 years.
WPI officials said that the school has poured almost $100 million into the field of life sciences education and research, mainly through its Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center and Gateway Park, opened in 2007. The life sciences industry has grown so much, and particularly in Gateway Park, that it risks losing existing tenants that are growing, as well as nearly 20 potential new tenants looking for space there.
