NSF grants $12.3M to joint nanoscale engineering center

By Brendan Lynch

The Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center for High-Rate Manufacturing , a joint venture among the University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts Lowell, has landed $12.3 million from the National Science Foundation, according to UNH officials.

The center’s goal is to improve the commercial production of nanoscale devices with components that are measured in nanometers. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter; the diameter of a human hair is approximately 50,000 to 80,000 nanometers.

Among its projects, the center is developing miniature nano-biosensors capable of detecting cancer at an early stage. The center is also working on low-power, flexible electronics, high-capacity miniature or large batteries that could be fully charged in minutes; plastics as strong as steel or as conductive as copper; and flexible, high-efficiency, lightweight solar cells.

In January 2007, Northeastern researchers, as part of the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, won a $1.2 million grant from Los Angeles-based W.M. Keck Foundation to conduct further nanotechnology research in developing a nanobio-chip, intended for animal testing to detect cancer.
