Somasundaran joins Modular Genetics scientific board

By Mass High Tech staff

Cambridge-based Modular Genetics Inc. has added P. Somasundaran, an expert on surfactant and colloid chemistry, to its scientific advisory board.

Somasundaran currently works at Columbia University as the La von Duddleson Krumb Professor, director of Langmuir Center for Colloids & Interfaces and director of the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Advanced Studies in Novel Surfactants.

A prolific author of 15 books and 600 scientific publications, Somasundaran is a 1985 inductee of the National Academy of Engineering. Somasundaran graduated from the Indian Institute of Science with a bachelor of engineering degree and from the University of California at Berkeley with a master’s degree and Ph.D.

The expertise of Somasundaran is expected by Modular Genetics officials to aid in the company’s pursuit of green surfactants — specifically, microorganisms that convert agricultural waste into new surfactants. This green surfactant could replace those made by petrochemicals or seed oils.

Based on technology licensed from Boston University and Harvard University, Modular Genetics was founded in 2000 by Kevin Jarrell, president and chief scientific officer, and Temple Smith, a bioinformatics pioneer and BU professor.
