Boston University officials have confirmed that personal information of thousands of individuals associated with an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program was exposed through a public file transfer program installed on a BU computer, according to a university publication.
BU Today reported Thursday that the incident affected some 6,675 people in the ROTC program — 406 directly affiliated with BU — but did not disclose what type of information was exposed. University officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
BU administrators discovered the breach last month when an individual came forward to inform the university the information was publicly available online. The school reports the data was exposed by a file transfer program inadvertently installed on a BU ROTC server.
The university is required by Massachusetts law to inform individuals affected by the breach as well as state agencies, but officials at the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulations could not immediately confirm if those reports have been filed.
