OpenCape proposes $40M Cape Cod broadband network
By Mass High Tech staff
OpenCape Corp., a nonprofit organization based in West Barnstable, announced that it is seeking federal stimulus funding to bring wireless broadband to Cape Cod, the Islands and southeastern Massachusetts.
The project is expected to cost $40 million to structure more than 300 miles of fiber optics, a microwave backhaul network and a regional colocation data center. Every town in Barnstable County, Dukes County and Nantucket Counties, in addition to 11 Plymouth County towns, would have wireless broadband capacity under the program.
OpenCape submitted its proposal for $40 million to the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program. The program is administered by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and funded by the $7.2 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The City of Boston also announced today a proposal for $15 million in stimulus funding to support a new Boston Broadband Network.
