U.S. renews $11.5M AS&E X-ray inspection order
By Mass High Tech staff
American Science and Engineering Inc. has won an $11.5 million renewal order from the U.S. government to handle service and maintenance on the company’s Z Backscatter Vans and ZBV Military Trailers — two systems used in counterterrorist measures.
The Z Backscatter van system comprises a mobile X-ray screening system built into standard commercial vans to allow for “drive-by” inspection. One or two operators can conduct X-ray imaging while the van drives past suspicious vehicles and objects. A remote console is also available for operating the system from a distance of up to 500 meters while the van is parked. The system’s scanner moves on rails past stationary vehicles and cargo to produce images from three sides — left, right, and top-down the company said.
The ZBV Military Trailers, built on a military van platform, are used to screen vehicles, containers, and other cargo for terrorist threats and contraband — simply by towing the trailer past the subjects, or by remaining stationary while vehicles drive past the trailer.
Based in Billerica, AS&E (Nasdaq: ASEI) defended the IP of its backscatter system in court in June after suing, and winning, a patent infringement suit against three New Jersey companies. Under the terms of a settlement agreement, AS&E will issue a limited license under the infringed patent. Financial terms of the license and other terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
AS&E reported a fiscal 2008 net income of $17.5 million on revenue of $166.7 million.
