Nuvera Fuel Cells inks hydrogen station deal

By Jackie Noblett

Nuvera Fuel Cells Inc. announced Monday it has signed a deal with a Pennsylvania firm to distribute and maintain Nuvera’s hydrogen refilling stations.

The five-year deal between Billerica-based Nuvera and Randor, Pa.-based Airgas Inc. calls for Nuvera to manufacture its PowerTap hydrogen stations for fuel cells in the materials handling industry and Airgas to distribute, install, maintain and provide backup hydrogen at customer sites.

The stations in North America are a key component to Nuvera’s fuel cell technology for forklifts and other warehouse equipment. The fuel cells replace traditional batteries in the equipment and run on hydrogen gas, which the refueling stations convert from natural gas.

Airgas will also provide leasing and alternative financing arrangements for the refuelling stations.

Nuvera Fuel Cells is majority owned by Hess Corp. and in the process of making fuel cells for cars.
