Westwood-based online game developer Turbine Inc. has pulled in a bag full of treasure, collecting $6.6 million in venture funding in what the company expects to be a $50 million Series D round, according to federal documents.
Previous investors in Turbine include Columbia Capital, Highland Capital Partners, Granite Global Ventures, Polaris Venture Partners and Tudor Ventures. With the addition of a $40 million Series C round that Turbine closed on in April of 2008, the company has raised approximately $94 million.
The new funding comes about one month before Turbine changes the business model on its Dungeons & Dragons Online massively multiplayer online game from a monthly subscription to a game that is free to play, with additional content available for purchase.
According to Adam Mersky, director of communications at Turbine, the free version of DDO Unlimited will use the same graphics and game-play technology as the current subscription-based Stormreach version.
In June, Turbine named M. Beau Paradowski as chief financial officer. Paradowski replaced Peter Faubert, who remains with Turbine.
Turbine also makes the games Lord of the Rings Online and Asheron’s Call.
