Cubist aims to expand Lexington lab space

By Julie M. Donnelly

Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. has presented a plan to the town of Lexington that would increase the drug maker’s existing footprint there by 110,000 square feet.

The addition would more than double the company’s laboratory space in Lexington, where Cubist now manages 88,000 square feet of commercial and laboratory space at its headquarters at 65 Hayden Ave., according to a regulatory filing. That facility sits on roughly 12 acres of land, which supports two other Cubist buildings that house roughly 170,000 square feet of administrative and other non-laboratory operations.

Cubist (Nasdaq: CBST) officials say the expansion would predominately house laboratory space for Cubist’s increased research and development activity.

The plan calls for an expanded surface area as well as a vertical expansion. The company may also decide to construct a parking garage to serve the larger facility.

Cubist delivered a sketch plan to Lexington officials June 26 and the company presented its plans to the Lexington Planning Board on July 8.

Cubist Chief Financial Officer David McGirr said the preliminary planning board meeting was encouraging. “They said, generally, they wanted Lexington to grow, and for good companies to grow,” he said in an interview.

The extra space is needed to support the growth of Cubist’s research team, McGirr said. Current headcount at the company is 540 people, and 325 workers are housed at the Lexington facility. Roughly 100 employees work in the labs, and Cubist plans to double its number of scientists to 200 by the end of 2011.

McGirr said the company hopes to break ground in late spring or early summer of 2010.
