KVH collects $1.7M more for weapon systems gyros
By Rodney H. Brown
KVH Industries Inc. says it has received a $1.7 million order from an unnamed customer for its fiber-optic gyros to be used in remote stabilized weapon systems — platforms that allow gunners to operate weapons from inside vehicles.
According to officials at Middletown, R.I.-based KVH Industries (Nasdaq: KVHI), shipment of the DSP-3100 FOGs should begin in the third quarter of the year and wrap up in early 2010.
KVH’s DSP-3100 FOGs help stabilize the sights and manage weapon recoil for remote stabilized weapon units so that the weapon stays on target whether the vehicle is stationary or moving, the company said.
Last month KVH collected $2.5 million in a previous order for the DSP-3100 precision fiber-optic gyros used in remote weapon systems. That order was expected to be completed by the end of the year, according to KVH.
KVH landed three deals in April worth about $6 million in total. The company landed $1 million from an unnamed customer for its CNS-5000 self-contained navigation system. Combining the company’s fiber optic gyro-based inertial measurement technology with GPS from a partner, the CNS-5000 can provide precise position and orientation, even if GPS signals are blocked, according to KVH officials.
KVH reported $82 million in revenue in 2008, with $3 million in net income.
