Athenahealth Inc., the Watertown-based provider of Internet-based business services to physician practices, reports that Todd Park, athenahealth (Nasdaq: ATHN) co-founder and current board director, has been appointed chief technology officer for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Park will resign from his position as a board director for athenahealth effective Aug. 10, and will also be required to divest his stock position in athenahealth and certain other financial interests. Park co-founded athenahealth in 1997 with current chairman and CEO Jonathan Bush.
Athenahealth is expected to benefit from the national stimulus plan, which includes $19 billion to support the adoption of electronic medical records. Park will have to recuse himself from matters that have to do with his former company.
Park joins a growing list of board directors at Massachusetts-based companies that have been tapped for positions in the Obama Administration, including Nancy-Ann deParle and Kristina Johnson, formerly of the Boston Scientific board.
In February, athenahealth signed a deal with its largest client to date, University Hospitals in Cleveland, to provide the community-based health system with on-demand revenue cycle management services.
