IBM buys security software play Ounce Labs

By Galen Moore

IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) reports it has acquired Ounce Labs Inc. for undisclosed terms. The acquisition is the Armonk, N.Y.-based computing giant’s 13th in Massachusetts since 2003.

The privately held Waltham-based company makes security and compliance software. In a press release issued this morning, IBM said it plans to integrate Ounce Labs’ enterprise source code security testing product with its IBM Rational AppScan family of security products.

IBM plans to retain Ounce Lab’s approximately 30 employees, including CEO Gary Jackson, and move them to its Mass Lab facility in Littleton and Westford — its largest software facility in North America, an IBM spokeswoman said.

The company’s most recent two Massachusetts acquisitions occurred in April, 2008, when the company bought Newton-based FilesX Inc., a provider of continuous data protection for remote offices, and Framingham-based Diligent Technologies Corp., a maker of disk-based data-deduplication systems.

Daniel Sabbah, general manager, IBM Rational Software, said in a statement the acquisition will allow IBM to provide a comprehensive security testing application for government and business customers’ entire software delivery process.
