MocoSpace is a mobile phone-based social network intended for young “Generation Y” consumers. On the site, users can build profiles, share pictures, instant message, chat and blog. The company says it makes money through advertising. In May, the company was a finalist in the 2009 MITX Technology Awards in the mobile category.

The company says it has struck partnerships with content providers like Sony Corp., Universal Music Group, 4Info, Greystripe Inc. and go2 Media Inc. to deliver content to mobile consumers. The company says it also partners with wireless carriers including T-Mobile USA Inc., Virgin Mobile USA Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc., and with advertising networks such as Admob Inc., Third Screen and Quattro Wireless Inc.

What’s the market size being pursued? MocoSpace says its market comprises more than 280 million mobile users in the U.S. Of those 280 million, 95 million pay for a data plan, according to the company.
Who are the likely competitors, direct or indirect? MocoSpace says direct competition comes from MySpace Mobile and Facebook Mobile. The company says indirect competition also comes from Radar.net and Shozu.
