PITCHING THE TECHNOLOGY

MocoSpace is a mobile phone-based social network intended for young “Generation Y” consumers. On the site, users can build profiles, share pictures, instant message, chat and blog. The company says it makes money through advertising. In May, the company was a finalist in the 2009 MITX Technology Awards in the mobile category.

Who is on the management team? Justin Siegel, CEO and co-founder; Jamie Hall, CTO and co-founder.

Have executives been involved in a cashout prior to this venture?  Siegel and Hall sold their former company JSmart Technologies to SK Group in 2004.

Who is on the board of advisers? John Simon, managing director, General Catalyst Partners; Brad Hoover, partner, General Catalyst Partners; Jim Sheinman, formerly of Bebo Inc.; Michael Dearing formerly of eBay Inc.; Raghav Gupta, vice president of international products, Brightcove Inc.

PITCHING THE BUSINESS

What partnerships, collaborations or affiliations are already in place? The company says it has struck partnerships with content providers like Sony Corp., Universal Music Group, 4Info, Greystripe Inc. and go2 Media Inc. to deliver content to mobile consumers. The company says it also partners with wireless carriers including T-Mobile USA Inc., Virgin Mobile USA Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc., and with advertising networks such as Admob Inc., Third Screen and Quattro Wireless Inc.

What’s the market size being pursued? MocoSpace says its market comprises more than 280 million mobile users in the U.S. Of those 280 million, 95 million pay for a data plan, according to the company.

Who are the likely competitors, direct or indirect? MocoSpace says direct competition comes from MySpace Mobile and Facebook Mobile. The company says indirect competition also comes from Radar.net and Shozu.

Is the company profitable?
No.
