Cable maker Belden closing Leominster plant

By Rodney H. Brown

Cabling company Belden Inc. of St. Louis, Mo., reports it plans to shut down one cable manufacturing plant in Leominster next year, putting about 170 people out of work, while shifting some of its workload to another Leominster site.

According to officials at Belden (NYSE: BDC), the plant, which makes wire and cable products, will cease all operations by July of 2010. Belden will move the production to other Belden manufacturing plants located in Leominster; Monticello, Ky.; and Nogales, Mexico.

The approximately 170 workers will be eligible for severance benefits from the company, according to Belden officials.

The Leominster plant closing is part of a restructuring plan Belden announced in December of 2008. In September of that year, Belden closed a plant in Manchester, Conn., laying off 132 employees and moving the manufacturing operation to Nogales.

Belden, which employs 7,500 people worldwide, reported a $361 million loss for 2008 on revenue of $2 billion.
