OpenCape taps RCN for fiber network on Cape Cod
By Mass High Tech Staff
OpenCape Corp., a nonprofit focused on bringing wireless broadband to Cape Cod and the Islands, reports it has picked RCN Metro Optical Networks, a division of RCN Corp. (Nasdaq: RCNI) to build and operate a 300-mile fiber network across Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and the Islands.
The establishment of a fiber backhaul network is the first step in OpenCape’s broadband plan, and the organization says it plans to apply in August for a $40 million grant under the federal Broadband Technology Opportunity Grant (BTOP) program of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to help pay for the network.
According to officials, RCN Metro will build and manage the open access network. OpenCape plans to allow municipal, public safety, and private last mile providers to connect to the new backhaul network for wide area network needs and to the Internet via its connection to the backbone in Boston and Providence.
OpenCape was founded by Cape Cod Community College, the Cape Cod Technology Council, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
RCN Corp. is a Virginia-based broadband services provider whose primary service areas include Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley, Pa., New York, Boston and Chicago.
In 2007, OpenCape installed the first link of its wireless network between University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Woods Hole.
